Cat's Book Club

Cat’s Book Club – March 2016

The Book Club…

I have always loved a good book, but with two young children, a job, and a television/candy crush addiction I fell out of love with reading.  However, around a year ago I joined a book group at the local community centre. The group unfortunately only met three time before it was disbanded due to low numbers, but it re-ignited my passion for reading and started me back  reading for pleasure.

Good Reads

Another great help for me was joining the website Good Reads.  This website allows you to create a profile where you can log the books you read (and rate them) and find books based on suggestions of the genres you like.  You can also connect with friends through facebook and see what they are reading which is excellent for a nosy person like me.  I have a friend Jo who shares a similar passion for books as me (she reads two books a week, works and has five year old twins – impressive!) so we share a lot of our books… and love to talk about them.  We run a mini book club in the school holidays while the children run around at softplay!  As I rarely make it to the local library this keeps the costs down as well as being good for the planet!

Cat’s recommendations

Here are some of this month’s highlights for me.
'I Let You Go' by Clare Mackintosh. ‘I Let You Go’ by Clare Mackintosh.  This was a fantastic psychological thriller which involved a young woman Jenna running from a tragic accident and attempting to create a new life for herself in a rural welsh community.  The story is split between the Detective who is trying to track her down and Jenna, and led to a gripping twist at the end.  I was hooked! This was Clare’s debut novel so I’ll be keeping an eye out for her next release.

'Big Little Lies' by Liane Moriarty.‘Big Little Lies’ by Liane Moriarty.  I absolutely love Liane Moriarty and have managed to read all of her books now but this was the best (and first one) I read.  The story is centred around a school playground in a Sydney suburb and the lives of the parents who’s main common ground is their children’s school! Sometimes it is hard to distinguish who are the children and adults in the way they behave. The book is funny as is told in a gossipy tone but tackles some extremely serious issues underneath the comedy! Must read!

'Into the Darkest Corner' By Elizabeth Haynes.‘Into the Darkest Corner’ By Elizabeth Haynes.  Not for the faint hearted.  This book is gripping as it describes the toxic relationship between the outgoing, confident Catherine and her manipulative boyfriend Lee.  Lee seems to be the perfect blue-eyed boyfriend and manages to convince all of her friends of this-but all is not what it seems.  Definitely not one to read on your own in a dark house!

'The Life I left Behind' by Colette MacBeth. ‘The Life I left Behind’ by Colette MacBeth.  Another psychological thriller…there seems to be a theme here.  This time the story is a murder who-dunnit told from three persectives-Melody, who survived a near fatal attack 6 years previously, Eve, the victim who wasn’t so lucky and Detective Inspector Victoria who is leading up the investigation. There was suspense at every chapter ending and I am keen to read MacBeth other acclaimed book ‘Precious Things’.

'The Silent Sister' By Diane Chamberlain.‘The Silent Sister’ By Diane Chamberlain.  This is an author I have discovered from my friend Jo and have managed to read around half a dozen of her novels but this one was my favourite.  Riley has a sister Lisa who committed suicide when she was 17, but when she goes home to
clear her recently deceased father’s home she realizes all is not what it seems.  Riley is on a mission to find out what happened to Lisa and why in an attempt to piece back her family. It’s a great family yarn with mystery that makes this is a great page turner.

I’ll be back next month for some more recommendations!  Maybe I’ll pop a male author on the list! I don’t think this is deliberate but i’ve just noticed they are all women and they all have a mystery / thriller / psychological theme.  I’m a creature of habit.  Any must reads please let me know!
